Can Animals Be Gay?

As you’re probably aware, June is Gay Pride Month. To show our gay pride, we’re having Gay Week over at Boinkology: from Monday to Friday, it’s all gay posts, all the gay time.

I used to have a gay cat. Or at least: I used to have a cat, and everyone in my family claimed that he was gay. This assumption was mostly based on the fact that he seemed to be extremely fond of cuddling up with men — especially gay men, who happened to visit my house relatively frequently.

Can animals really be gay, though? There’s certainly evidence that suggests that homosexual behavior is rather common in the animal kingdom (enough evidence to inspire a museum exhibit in Oslo, in fact).

In many cases (like bonobos, for instance), homosexual behavior is used as a form of social bonding (the equivalent of bowling, say, or getting a drink with a coworker) — though there have been instances of animals forming homosexual bonds and raising children together (anyone remember the gay penguins?).

So, um, what was that homosexual behavior being unnatural?
