Sexual State of the Nation: Japan Edition

A while back, the AP reported that near 40% of Japanese adults haven’t had sex in the past month — which does a lot to explain Japan’s plunging birth rate. Last week, a survey was released that sheds some light on why so many Japanese aren’t doing the nasty. Among Japanese men aged 30-34, virginity is surprisingly common: near a quarter of them identify as virgins (with 65% claiming to have had sex, and 11% providing an invalid answer).

Now, I’m no Japanologist (though I do have some friends with Asian fetishes), so I don’t feel qualified to hazard a guess at the cause of this virginity epidemic. Of course, even the Japanese themselves seem hard pressed to explain what’s going on (though virgins do form support groups in the hope that banding together will make it easier to get laid. Doesn’t seem to work well.).

There are some who choose to look on the bright side, however, arguing that their virginity is a blessing, not a curse, and that they are now “liberated”:

“Most human worries stem from sex, right? Guys chat up women because they want to satisfy their sexual desire, which also motivates them to get a good job. You want to get along well with a woman, but you’re filled with lust and thinking so much about sex it makes it hard to get along well with the woman anyhow,” says a 30-year-old… who bought female hormones online to stifle his sexual urges. “Without lust, I’m doing much better with work and with women than I ever have.”

Well, to each their own, I suppose.
