60-Second Science (the Scientific American podcast) has a report on a potential vaccine for HIV — one that would mimic the natural immunity some people already have against HIV (it’s all in the genes).
Boinkology’s never known a world without AIDS (yes, we’re that young), so the thought of a vaccine for HIV is mind boggling. Not mind boggling enough to make us go wild and crazy and have a bunch of unprotected sex, but still: mind boggling. A world without AIDS? Whoa.
Of course, it’s also probably a ways off (these things take time, since), so we’re not going to let ourselves get too excited (or mind boggled) just yet. We’ll just, um, be really happy that there’s an HPV vaccine already on the market and a herpes vaccine that’s in clinical trials. Cause that’s almost as good as an HIV vaccine (almost).
