The Whys of Sex

There are lots of reasons to have sex: 237, in fact — at least according to Cindy M. Meston and David M. Buss, two Texas psychologists who recently published a taxonomy of sexual motivation.

Entries on the list range from the obvious (“I wanted to reproduce”) to the sweet (“I realized I was in love”) to the odd (“I wanted to change the topic of conversation”) to the downright disturbing (“It was the only way my partner would spend time with me”), making it very clear that, when it comes to sex, there’s no such thing as a universal experience.

Since, you know, we’re total nerds, and we love sex, Boinkology is thrilled to see more research into the social side of sexuality (as well as attempts to classify and better understand those reasons) — and we’d love to see that research continue to grow and expand and explore more territory. The New York Times apparently feels the same way: they’re encouraging readers to help come up with a 238th reason.

Feel like there are already enough reasons to have sex? You might want to help out Dr. Buss and Dr. Meston with their new project: developing a list of reasons to say no to sex. Interested participants are invited to fill out a questionnaire.
