The Midwest Teen Sex Show

Boinkology is often depressed by the lack of intelligent discourse about sex, so it’s always a nice little thrill to discover a website (or book or TV show or whatever) that actually manages to talk about sex without sounding completely inane.

This week, we were introduced to “The Midwest Teen Sex Show,” a semimonthly podcast that provides sex advice (which we assume is directed at Midwest teens — you know, given the title and all). Four episodes in, they’ve already covered female masturbation, abstinence, older boyfriends, and birth control, and have designs on male masturbation, homosexuality in high school, and porn as well.

At its best, the show is witty, informative, and really amusing (we particularly liked the episode on female masturbation); at its worst, the jokes can be a bit tired and the information incomplete (the episode on birth control falls flat, and demonstrates a severe lack of knowledge about modern methods: the pill, Depo, and Norplant (a method that’s been discontinued in the States) are discussed; while the patch, the ring, Implanon (the new Norplant), and IUDs are completely ignored. A bit of research would have helped.).

In spite of its flaws, “The Midwest Teen Sex Show” is a refreshing (and much needed) podcast, and one that Boinkology is looking forward to seeing more of. As the show evolves and finds its stride, it could turn into something really great: and we’ll be watching to see what happens (and cheering them on in the meantime).
