Village Voice on Webcam Sex
The last time Boinkology mentioned Bonnie Ruberg’s “Click Me” column (aka the Village Voice cybersex column), we kinda trashed it. Not this time, though: we’re pleased to say that last Friday’s column on webcam sex (which, yeah, we just found) is actually quite good, providing a nice little intro on webcam sex for the uninitiated.
Ruberg’s write up is pretty comprehensive, covering four different types of webcam sex (pay to watch a webcam show, get paid to perform on webcam, join a site full of amateur feeds, actually cam and chat via iChat AV/Adult Friend Finder/etc.) and the pros and cons of each. Even so, there are a few things we’d like to add:
- Ruberg mentions the iSight (which comes built-in with all new Mac laptops and iMacs) as a reason to try webcam sex: you have a webcam right there, why not try it out? While we agree with this in theory, it’s important to note that — if you do decide that webcam sex is your thing — the iSight really blows. The fixed position makes for crappy angles (not to mention extreme moments of awkwardness should you try to use it to show off your naughty bits). If you’re serious about exploring cam sex, an external webcam is the way to go.
- If you’re more interested in watching than performing, you could go to a site like Cam Girls Live (as Ruberg suggests). You could also go to an independent cam site and support a girl who’s actually running her own site (like, say, Tasty Trixie and her Spy On Us ring of cams), and rest easy knowing that all your cash is going straight to the source, rather than to anonymous site owners. (Yes, independent cam girls are a dying breed. We still love and support them.)
- Boinkology personally believes that the best kind of webcam sex is with a preexisting partner (or, at least, someone you already know and really want to flirt with). If you want to go this way, we recommend iChat AV or Skype, for the full voice/video chat experience (though there is something to be said for going real old school and doing video + text chat or even (gasp!) repeatedly refreshing still images (think JenniCam). What can we say? There’s something sexy about a little mystery).

Hi Boinkology,
The link to your older post is unfortunately broken, so I’m not sure exactly what you trashed in one of my previous columns (I’m always up for a good fight :), but I actually really appreciate the added advice that you guys gave on re: Webcams. I’ve been cybersex active for years, but mostly text-based, so I’m admittedly pretty new to cam-based sex myself. I’m checking out the independent cam sites you mentioned right now, and I’m hoping to put up a link at my Village Voice blog in the hopes that you’re suggestions help even more readers. It’s good to know I’ve got fellow experts keeping me in line :).
