Last week’s Click Me (aka the Village Voice cybersex column) touches on an age old issue: the faked orgasm. Just like in real sex, orgasms aren’t always freely flowing, and just like in real sex, people fear disappointing their partners. The big difference? It’s a lot easier to fake it when there’s the entire Internet (and, say, three thousand miles) between you and your partner.
Bonnie Ruberg touches on a whole slew of reasons why someone might fake (some are the same online and off, some — like the difficulty of jacking it while typing — are particular to the cyber world), as well as some tips for figuring out whether someone’s being on the level about their sexual response.
Our favorite part, however, comes (ha!) at the very end of the piece, when Ruberg concludes that:
Beyond that, the best advice I can offer is: get over it. Not so much get over the faking, as get over the sheer importance of orgasms. They’re great. No question. But there’s more to cybersex—and sex in general—that just coming. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Truer words were never spoken.
