Science Tries To Reinforce Stereotypes

So maybe it’s on account of our notoriously bad gaydar (we don’t think in terms of gay or straight — we just assume everyone wants to get in our pants), but here at Boinkology, we’ve never been too keen on the idea that, well, the gays “naturally” act/look/walk a certain way that’s totally, completely different from the straights.

And after reading this article, out of Science Daily (and via Jezebel), which claims that gays and lesbians not only walk funny, but look funny too (uh, we mean “have gender-incongruent body types”) — well, frankly, we’re still not convinced.

For one thing, we can’t help but notice that this study involved a grand total of sixteen volunteers. Yep. Sixteen. That’s four straight men, four straight ladies, four gay men, and four lesbians — somehow, that doesn’t seem enough to make grand statements about the gay walk (let alone the gay body type).

We also found ourselves completely baffled by the following statement (made by the study’s lead author, Kerri Johnson):

“Studies like ours are raising questions about the value of the military’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy,” Johnson said. “If casual observers can determine sexual orientation with minimal information, then the value in concealing this information certainly appears questionable. Given that we all appear to be able to deduce this information to some degree with just a glance, more comprehensive policies may be required to protect gays against discrimination based on their sexual orientation.”

Now, we’re all for repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell” (and maybe replacing it with something along the lines of “don’t care, don’t give a fuck”), but repealing it because the gays are just so obvious (against their will! It’s their biology!) and need more “protection”? Um, thanks, we’ll pass.
