A recently released study revealed that (gasp!) fathers aren’t always so good at doing the whole birds-and-bees talk. Somehow, we don’t find this to be too shocking — and neither does Jim White, who rhapsodizes about his difficulties with father-son sex talks in the Telegraph.
Can we just consider this one more reason why comprehensive sex education is a must in today’s schools? Sure, it’s better if parents have the sex talks with their kids: but since some are clearly not willing or able or well-informed enough, shouldn’t we be offering some back up via the public schools?
[Also: The piece ends with some quotes from notable men on how their fathers neglected to teach them about how things work. Our favorite comes from Tim Lott:
"I recall my parents leaving a leaflet around in the living room, as though it was accidental. I don't remember much about the leaflet, other than that it dealt with the reproductive process and was something suitably medical. I remember clearly feeling that I was meant to find it. My father never even showed me how to shave. But, I mean, it's not that hard to pick up, is it?"
Now that's some good parenting, right there.]
