Thanksgiving: a time to count our blessings and think about all the things we’re thankful for. The staff of Boinkology has more than a few things to be thankful for — and we’d like to take a moment to share them with you.

How do I love masturbation? Let me count the ways:

1) Masturbation allows you to focus on you. Much as I love partnersex, there are times when I just want to be selfish and just focus on my own pleasure without worrying whether or not a partner is getting off. We aren’t born knowing what turns us on, or how to get off — for most of us, it takes a little (and sometimes more than a little) practice to figure it all out. Sure, some of us figure it out through partnersex, but masturbation’s also a great way to explore and figure it all out, so that when a partner asks you what you like, you know exactly what to tell them.

4) Masturbation is safe sex. Unless you’re sticking unsanitary objects inside yourself or getting things lost up your butt (use a toy with a flared base, people!), there’s pretty much no way to harm yourself through masturbation. You can’t give yourself an STI, you can’t get pregnant — and no, you won’t get hairy palms or go blind.

5) All the cool kids masturbate. Jamye Waxman wrote a book about it, Rachel Kramer Bussel thinks it’s “totally fucking awesome,” and Betty Dodson’s pretty much built her career around it. Nuff said.
