“Born in a Barn”: Ponyplay for the Unintiated

We don’t know much about ponyplay, so we were pretty psyched to receive a copy of “Born in a Barn,” a Three Graces Films documentary about, well, ponyplay. Finally, we thought: all our questions about ponyplay will be answered! Even the ones we didn’t know enough to ask!

And now that we’ve seen the documentary — well, we sorta get what ponyplay is about. “Born in a Barn” provides a fascinating look into the world of ponyplay, examining the fetish through the eyes of four pony enthusiasts. The film explains the hows, whys, and wheres of ponyplay, discussing why it appeals to people — and providing more than a few fascinating demos of what, exactly, a pony scene entails.

What’s lacking, unfortunately, is a strong sense of who the subjects are outside of the pony world. Sure, it’s fascinating to see what makes them tick, and what they get out of being, or being with, ponies, but without the, shall we say, human element, it’s a little hard to identify with, or really understand, the characters.

Though we ultimately enjoyed the exploration of ponyplay, we didn’t really finish the film with a concrete sense of what, exactly, is so erotic about horses. But then again, when we were little, we never wanted a pony.

From what I understand, horses are powerful, beautiful animals that are also very sensitive. For some folks, they imbue the animals with their own sense of what should be in the world, and since these creatures are domesticated, they shoulder the artifice without complaint.

Some folks make horses their safe fake boyfriends.

    The Scoot:

Interesting. I just see them as giant things with weird pointy faces.

I was never into pointy faces.

  • Loren Roderick says :

It’s usually not so much that horses themselves are erotic, its often about the training and power dynamic that goes along with it. Those I know who enjoy pony/puppy/etc play do not do so due to a direct eroticism towards the animal but rather to the domination/submission that it entails.

    Loren:

Thanks for the clarification. That is something I can understand — though it wasn’t totally what I got from this movie, which did have some people who seemed very into the pony part (including one woman who was a former horse trainer and seemed to have gotten into ponyplay after she lost her horses).
