We often get asked to define whether or not something is porn. What’s porn? What’s erotica? What’s a pin up? (Short answer: they’re all the same thing.) But we’ve never been asked to define whether or not something is porn or sex — though after reading Regina Lynn’s piece on porn 2.0, we might start asking that question more often.
Is an interactive cam girl show porn? Is it sex? Is it something completely different? We’re not sure we buy into Lynn’s definitions of porn and sex — but we’re fascinated by her argument that the evolution of technology is going to change our views on both.

Hmm…
I don’t buy in to Lynn’s definition. I feel that porn is… give me a second… “any graphical, aural, tactile, or other abstract representation that somehow excites or enhances the erotic experience of an individual.”
As such, a demolition derby on tape could be porn for some individual. Indeed, a derby in real life could be a melding of both porn and foreplay to like-minded persons.
Sex… well, does sex require all participants to be in the same room? Do all participants need to be fully aware of all other participants for it to be more sex than porn? I think cam shows, in which a performer or performers are minimally reacting to hundreds or even thousands of observers is an example where porn and sex fuse together to be both and neither, together.
Well, that’s my opinion, at least.
December 17th, 2007 at 7:52 pmI don’t like the idea that there has to *be* a definitive, dividing line between sex and porn – but it seems like most people need there to be one, for whatever reason.
Also I don’t know if that photo is real or Photoshopped, but if it’s real, they *totally* stole my conference name! (Note of explicit sarcasm: this is not an actual legal threat. It is simply snark. I don’t have the thing service-marked, anyway.)
December 18th, 2007 at 5:38 pmIt’s real — it was a magazine I saw at a bodega in Williamsburg. And yeah, I thought it was interesting that Sex 2.0 is catching on.
December 18th, 2007 at 5:45 pmI like that it appears to be saying, “Bad Idea: Sex 2.0.” Heh.
