We’ve always had a place in our hearts for Tionna Smalls, author of Girl, Get Your Mind Right and dispenser of excellent advice. So we were pretty sad to learn that she’d been let go from the staff of Gawker. Has the world lost respect for solid, sound advice?
Saddened as we are by the news, we’re quite sure that Ms. Smalls will come out on top, dispensing advice and talking dat ish wherever she goes. We’re looking forward to seeing where she pops up next — we’ll keep you posted when we hear more!

She will be missed on Gawker but I’m sure there are great things in store for her yet.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:54 pmThat’s kinda unbelievable considering how good she was. Hmmm…
January 4th, 2008 at 3:45 pmI think she’ll go far. But hopefully this will push her to be more than a modern day mistrel show, dancing for all the white folks. I want to see the white folks dance for her.
January 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pmI think the minstrel show comment one is an interesting one — I can definitely see where it comes from, but knowing Tionna, I don’t think it’s accurate.
January 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pmNo, I don’t think its nearly that simple. I think she was able to use gawker just as effectively as gawker used her. And this clearly demonstrates her savvy. But her entertainment value on gawker was largely based on laughing at her exagerated urban black girl persona. Given that she’s pretty much the only not-white thing about gawker (excluding The Assimilated Negro; I do miss him)I’m going to say that gawker’s use of Tionna while not malicious was also highly racially questionable. I’m excited to see her go onto bigger and better things.

I think that’s a valid argument. What bugs me about the minstrel show thing is that it suggests that Tionna herself is trying to just dance for white people, which has never been my impression. But yeah — she definitely deserves bigger and better things, and I’m excited to see what happens to her.
January 5th, 2008 at 3:49 pmI don’t think she was like trying to, as in she thought to herself, “you know what I’m gonna do today, I’m gonna go make affluent people feel smug in their proper grammar and advanced education”. But I think she did. I doubt minstrel dancers really went out with a pure desire to entertain white people either. It sucks that it seems that the choice, but who wouldn’t sell themselves short to get out of the ghetto? I know I probably would…
Honestly though, she should take over Tyra.
January 6th, 2008 at 2:27 pmTionna could kick Tyra’s ass.
And then some.
