The traditional wedding dress is horribly out of date. In a day and age where most people choose to delay marriage until they’ve been around the block a few (or more than a few) times, a dress that symbolizes chastity, purity, virginity — well, it’s a bit of a stretch, really.
But are we ready for the pendulum to swing the other way? Can our culture prepared to handle an onslaught of sexy wedding dresses?
We may not have a choice, because — like it or not — they’re coming. Good-bye, blushing bride; hello, blushing father of the bride. Hey, if you’re going to commit your body to one person for the rest of your life, you may as well look hot while doing it.

February 21st, 2008 at 12:46 pmWhenever Rusty and I get married, I’m totally pole dancing at the wedding. I won’t be throwing my garter… people will be stuffing money in it.
February 21st, 2008 at 1:19 pmOh bah humbug. What a revolting photo on that NYT article. Since when did ’sexy’ include a tramp stamp? I agree, wedding gowns can be as sexy as the bride desires, that’s awesome. But what our culture most seriously needs is a more nuanced examination of what “sexy” means. Here’s a hint: It’s not synonymous with “O HAI DEEZ MAH BEWBS.” Where’s the fun in attention-starved desperation? It’s your wedding, people will already be paying attention to you!
Whatever, I have always fancied high-necked wedding gowns. Bare skin is boring and easy. Skin just glimpsed under some lace, though….muy sexy.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pmIreene, you cant expect society to fully share your overly developted aesthetics values. You are an artist, an albatros soaring high.
Let the rest of us mortals have some skin.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pmIrene - you are right on the money - I totally agree about more nuanced examinations of “sexy”. It’s assumed in the popular press (or so it seems) that there’s a universal definition for sexy. Not so as well we know. What exactly does “sexy” mean these days anyway? Is it a style of dress? Is it the way you feel? Is it a scent? I know what makes me feel sexy, but that’s just me….
