Well known for their comparatively open and frank approach to nudity and sexuality, the French have topped (ha) the USA once again in the sex ed department. A new exhibit for youngsters called “Zizi Sexuel” is making the news by taking a warm, human approach to sex education in an attempt to bring a little color to a subject that is often taught in decidedly un-sexy anatomical terms.
There has been some mild controversy about the child-appropriateness of the material, but it’s received more local media praise than condemnation. It sounds like exhibit curator Maud Gouy has exactly the right idea: “[W]e want the exhibit to be another view of what goes on between men and women without it being… raw. Instead, we promote respect, romantic feelings, pleasure.”

One of my favorite sex books for kids (the name escapes me, but it’s got a cartoon bird and bee) features illustrations of people of literally all different shapes and sizes — and, unlike most media, they even include physically disabled people in their pictures too. It warms my jaded little heart.
