We’ve been following Nerve for some time now, from the days of literate smut and alternative stimulation to the “I Did It For Science” adventures of Grant Stoddard (later Rev. Jen) and the Em and Lo Down, through the rise and fall of Spring Street Networks, and ultimately into it’s current incarnation. Though we haven’t always agreed with the site’s content or choices, we’ve always respected it for being one of the first web sites to stand up for sex, to put it forth as something fascinating, beautiful, and worth extended reflection and study.
So we were extremely saddened when heard that Nerve Media might be thinking of ditching their sex-themed site. We’ve already seen them move into new territories with Babble, their parenting site, and blogs like Screengrab and The Modern Materialist, but hearing that Nerve Media might be looking to completely remake themselves as a blog network — well, that was just disappointing (and, um, completely uncreative, too).
We can only hope that this is nothing but a nasty rumor. If we lost Nerve, it would be a sad day for (intelligent) sex media.
UPDATE: Sources have told us that Rufus Griscom denies these allegations, claiming that Nerve Media is diversifying, but not ditching their sex themed site. We’ll keep you updated as the story unfolds.
Got any tips on this story? Let us know — if it is just a rumor, we’ll rest much easier at night.
