File under obvious: children benefit far more from having an ongoing discussion with their parents about sex and sexuality than they do from that one big sex talk. It seems that normalizing discussion of sex helps kids see sex as a normal part of life — not something scary, shocking, and out there — which, in turn, helps them to make better decisions about sex, and less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

My daughter is 5, and has started asking questions about where babies come from, so I bought her the book It’s Not the Stork. Which she loves. It shows all the stuff that’s not in her other body book (reproductive organs, etc).
When we got to the page showing a cartoon drawing of sperm reaching the egg, I told her “This page shows where babies get started.”
She looked at me incredulously and asked: “In outer space???”
Well, she is only five.
