Should novelty stores like Spencer’s Gifts carry sex toys? The chain store’s naughty wares have North Carolina parents (and the local news, natch) in an uproar: apparently, parents aren’t too keen on their kids being able to find sex-themed products at their local mall.
At the same time (albeit across the country), the Chico State sex columnist has written a piece revealing that she purchased her first vibrator at Spencer’s. It seems this bastion of corruption was the only non-skeevy place she could go to purchase a sex toy (clearly, she has a different definition of skeevy than we do).
Does having sex toys in mall stores corrupt minors? Or does it make sex toys more accessible to people who might shy away from 18 and over stores? Or is it a little of both?
We prefer to purchase sex toys from clean, well-lit stores like Babeland and Good Vibrations — but we’re also aware that that’s not an option for everyone, as these stores mainly exist in dense urban areas.
We’d also be remiss if we failed to point out that some of our favorite sex toys can be purchased at places like the Sharper Image — and no one seems interested in making that place 18+.

If you don’t want your kid going to Spencers.. DONT LET THEM GO IN THERE!!!
As a mother myself, I’m not going to let her run around in a mall alone untill she is like 14 or so. And after she is like 14, she is old enough to know what sex is and probally masterbating alreayd and it is fine if she wants a vibrator.
March 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pmI dont think it’s reasonable to “hide” sex toys. I dont want to have to ask to look at them one at a time. Gah.

Well put!
As an aside — after writing this piece, I went to the Spencer’s website and was shocked to see that they actually carry quality vibes. I was expecting the rabbit in forty different colors, but they have toys by companies I like and respect — like Lelo, for instance.
Who knew?
