No More Good Sex Scenes?

We were pretty surprised to find this SF Gate blog post attesting that there haven’t been any good cinema sex scenes since the dawn of the 21st century (or, if you prefer, since 9/11).

Like, really? Seriously? Someone is seriously making that claim?

Off the top of our heads, we can already think of Secretary (2002) and Shortbus (2006) — and we’re pretty sure that there are a whole lot more movies that we could add. We’d actually be more likely to claim that there weren’t any good cinematic sex scenes until the start of the 21st century — but don’t worry, we’re not stupid enough to actually say something like that.

And, while we’re on the topic of sex in movies: we’d just like to put it out there that 9 Songs gets our vote for worst cinematic sex scene ever. You would think that a movie that’s entirely about fucking and going to concerts would (somehow) manage to be hot, but… not so much.

Secretary was one of the hottest movies I have ever seen. I don’t know how they can even qualify that statement at all.

OK, the orginal SF gate post goes beyond ludicrous.

First off, linking the death of the American film sex scene to 9/11 is just wierd and almost paranoid. Yes, a lot of important aspects of life and society (civil liberties, for one) were affected…but sex scenes? Please.

Second, the aforementioned “death” is much exaggerated. Aside from “Secretary” and “Short Bus,” what about Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s in “Brokeback Mountain”? Or Marisa Tomei’s scenes in “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”?

I could go on (as I’m sure lots of others could), but let me just ramble on to my third point…forget American *films” what about the boom in *television* sex scenes this century? Thanks to networks like HBO, Showtime, and FX, there’s a regular supply of real, honest (and therefore hot) sex scenes, as well as plenty of trashy, raunchy (and therefore hot in a different way) sex scenes. And I’m not talking about late night skinemax (which is nice in its own way), but actual good sex scenes in the context of well-made dramas.

On the trashy side, maybe the best example is HBO’s “Rome,” which mixed incredible historical reenactment with better-than-soft-porn sex seasons for two seasons.

On the real/sweet side…there’s a scene between Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver in the pilot for FX’s “The Riches,” where they haven’t seen each other in two years…they’re finally alone after her homecoming party, they’re both drunk…Eddie strips down to his pasty white butt, mounts Minnie, and promptly comes in about three seconds. It’s real, and funny…but also tender and true…and therefore hot.

And finally lets not forget that both Showtime’s “Weeds” and FX’s “Dirt” featured pegging scenes in the past two years. If that doesn’t tell you that the state of the American sex scene is strong, I don’t know what does.

    OK, dismounting soap box.

BTW, thanks for a great screen grab from one of my favorite movies. Every post on Boinkology should start off with a bent over Gyllenhaal (Maggie or Jake, your choice.)

Greatest idea ever. I must find some bent over Jake pictures from Brokeback Mountain. Or some other movie that he’s in.

See, Secretary actually got me laid. I started talking to a girl via CL and the thing that caught her eye about my ad? Mentioning that Secretary is the sexiest movie I’d ever seen. This led to a 6 month long semi-crazy, very hot, D/s relationship that ended amicably and still lingers as wonderfully sexy.

    Yeah, Secretary is goodness.

The Doom Generation is one of the best movies for sex scenes and to watch with someone whom you hope to sex.
