Why Do We Care About Politicians’ Sex Lives?

Mere days into Governor Paterson’s tenure as head honcho of New York State, and we’re already being bombarded with news about his sex life. My god! Paterson cheated on his wife seven years ago! Oh wait — she cheated on him too! And it was during a rough patch! Heaven forbid!

Forgive us for being blunt, but why is this news? Why do we care whether or not Paterson and his wife fuck only each other, fuck their neighbors, or fuck half of the world? If it’s not illegal (sorry, Spitzer — we do feel for you), why does it have any bearing on his ability to run the state of New York?

Sure, there’s the whole “He lied to his wife, he’ll lie to us” argument — but does anyone really buy that? Quite frankly, if we all ran our personal lives the way we run our businesses, we’d have a vastly lower divorce rate. How we run our private lives has little bearing on how we perform our jobs. If only the media could start to understand that, then — well, we wouldn’t have to listen to so many inane stories about what politician was shtupping who.

That’s not the problem, the problem is he helped police prostitution, and had a holier than thou attitude about doing it himself. Other then that it is no ones business who he sleeps with.

  • Lux Alptraum says :

We’re talking about Paterson here, not Spitzer. Paterson’s views on prostitution, though surely interesting, don’t seem to have much bearing on the fact that he feels the need to be public about the fact that he cheated on his wife.

  • The Scoot says :

He had an affair, and it didn’t involve lying under oath, the “trafficking” of prostitutes, or robbing the city blind?

If his affairs are an indication of his governance, I hope he stays governor for thirty years.

Woops, my bad. In which case, it’s no business of ours. Dyslexia is a bitch.
