How To Recycle Old Porn

Porn, even the best porn, doesn’t always last forever. Blame it on the diminishing returns of porn: what was jackable yesterday is old and boring today. So what’s a caring consumer to do with perfectly good porn that no longer holds any interest?

Amazon and eBay are out, as neither retails adult materials. You could put up a listing on Craigslist, but that might be welcoming a little too much creepiness into your life. And yes, you could just throw it out — but what a waste! We sat down and thought up some alternative ways to pass on the porn and make sure it finds a good home:

Pass on to friends. If your friends are open minded, this is definitely the easiest (and most preferable) route, as well as a great way to share the porn that’s touched you the most — or at least made you touch yourself the most. Doesn’t everyone deserve a chance to watch WHAT?

Donate to a raffle. Friends too prudish to take your porn? Find a sex-positive organization that’d be willing to raffle it off. If you have a Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School in your area, they might be a good bet. Here in New York, Molly Crabapple is always happy to take our porn off our hands!

Do an anonymous drop. Craigslist isn’t entirely a lost cause. If you’re in a urban area of decent density, put your unwanted porn in a box, leave it on a street corner, and then post to the Craigslist “Free” section letting wouldbe porn owners know where you’ve left it. First one to find it wins! (Be sure to check local laws before doing this. We don’t want you to get arrested.)

Porno crafts. If you absolutely can’t get rid of your porn, give it new life through porno crafts. Make a dress, make a sculpture, make art, make whatever — and if you’re particularly motivated, make something you can sell on Etsy. If you can’t give your porn away, get your porn to give back!

Interesting ideas for a good cause…

I think my problem with Option 1 is, well, I have to hit the Purell hand disinfectant twice after handling non-porn movies from Netflix, I’m not sure how I feel getting something from a friend that I know they handled relatively soon after jacking off. Same with giving it away to a friend…it’s like the “tagged” newspaper the guy at work takes into the Men’s room with him.

Option 3 seems like a good way to get arrested, but that’s probably just the area I’m living in.

For magazines, if you have the patience, you could simply shred them then put them in with your other paper recyclables.

I wonder if any good sex stores offer a “porn return” system where they’d take tapes and DVDs back for recycling…like cell phone stores will take your old phone and batteries.

Option 3 came about after a friend talked about disposing of an old printer in a similar fashion.

She did it late at night in the East Village. That’s probably an ideal situation for something like this.
