Just because you post a photo with your buddy… well, that doesn’t mean you’re looking to meet gay singles, not that there is anything wrong with that! Yet somehow, that’s what Facebook assumed when Peter Knox posted the following photo.
Peter states in his post, “I really have no idea why Facebook thinks I’m gay. All of my sidebar ads are for these kind of things. Facebook should just check orientation. Mine says straight, right after it says I’m a male. Yet I get this ad, ‘Gayborhood’ and so many other ads littering my sidebar all the time. Talk about a deterrent to be on Facebook at work!” It even happens when he’s looking at a girl’s profile… and yet when his buddy posts an a questionable photo with his buddy he still gets ads for straights. What gives?
All these targeted ads have me wondering: is this a wide spread issue or isolated case?

April 17th, 2008 at 1:12 pmI’ve been wondering about this recently too, I’ve noticed a sidebar ad frequently for “Hot Gay Men”. I double-checked my “interested in” setting and it was indeed “women”, so I don’t know what it’s thinking. Clearly, it’s not very well targeted. :p
