SUBMITTED BY SUEPATTRA AKA ALL SASHA: As readers of Boinkology, we’re of course hip to all that is the world of sex, love and dating. And Boink gives us an opportunity to keep up with this uber cool world by delivering cutting edge news, allowing us to post comments and by connecting directly with one another. (I always check out everyone’s sites & blogs, don’t you?).
But as an academic, I’ve found that there sometimes can be a little bit (uh, try huge) disconnect between what’s available on the internets and in the blogosphere around sex, as compared to what’s been published in academic circles.
I know, I know. Who cares what gets published in the academic journals? BORING. Who needs that when we have sites like Boinkology or all manners of online guides for dating and sex in the 21st century. Well, policy makers, public health practitioners and the capitalist powers that be, often quote academic data to further their agendas and shape policy that can directly or indirectly effect our sex lives. But don’t worry, I’m not going to get on my soapbox about the larger research agenda.
Rather, I’m going to shamelessly plug my dissertation research study and ask for your collective insight into online dating and “hooking up”. After Sunday’s New York Times Modern Love Essay Contest winner was revealed, I’d really love to know more about what you all really think about hooking up, and online dating in particular.
So here’s the nitty gritty, if you’re female, 18+ and have used at least one website in the past year to meet your dating or sex partners….you’re eligible to partiicpate in the online web survey.
All respondents are eligible to enter into a random drawing to win a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate. All answers are completely confidential but an email address is required to enter the drawing. Your email address will never be given or sold to a third party.
Who am I? Well, I am a graduate student at the University of California, San Francisco. I am conducting research on women’s experiences using the Internet to date and meet partners for the specific purpose of “hooking up”. I am interested in women’s perspectives and experiences with these types of encounters and matters of sex and intimacy in general. The online survey will take anywhere between 10-20 minutes depending upon the length of your responses.
If you wish to participate, or would like to learn more about this study, please visit the survey website.
You can read more about the research study, the survey and the drawing on the website. Thank you for considering sharing your thoughts and opinions on this very important subject.

despite being online almost every day for the past 18 years, i’ve somehow managed to never make a love connection over the internet.
are you including folks who meet on non-dating sites like forums and stuff? my totally unscientific observations see those meetings being more ’successful’ than dating sites.
