Spotted on the BMEzine ModBlog: this before and after shot of one Elliot’s chest reconstruction surgery. This makes us happy for several reasons:
Seriously, read what he says about the photo:
I’m what my (legally mandatory) psychologist would call a transsexual. I got an official diagnosis and everything — gender identity disorder! Certificate of disorder in hand, Dr. ***** was convinced I was a real transsexual. Little did he know I’m actually a bisexual-tranny-fag-dyke genderfucked kid! And now I’ve got my own little fuck-you-gender/sex-binary body
Nothing like a little genderfucking to get our week off to a great start.

Jay:
If you want to go on hormone therapy and go through sex change surgery, you’re required to have a psychologist diagnose you with gender identity disorder.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:10 amYeah, I’m transssexual myself so I know far more than I need to know about this subject. I will give you a concise summary.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:30 amFirst off, it’s not legally mandated at all. It is not an issue with laws. No doctor could get in criminal trouble for prescribing testosterone or performing sex reassignment surgeries without a letter. In fact, many doctors treating trans people don’t even require “the letter” anymore and prefer to operate (no pun intended) on an informed consent model. Also, it doesn’t have to be from a psychologist–mine was from an LCSW. And it didn’t diagnose me with GID at all but said that I was “gender dysphoric” and was appropriate for hormone therapy.
I realize that you probably are just going off what the person in this article is stating, but they are wrong. They or you should read the WPATH (formerly Harry Benjamin) standards of care. As clearly stated in them, they are just guidelines and suggestions, and aren’t mandatory for transitioning.
also, i want to say that i’m not commenting to be a dick. there is a lot of misinformation out there and i think it does something of a disservice to trans people. that’s all. (:

I don’t think you’re a dick at all, and I appreciate the clarification. I was going off of the experiences that friends have had, in addition to this person’s experiences — but it’s good to know that it’s not legally mandated!
