Burlesque Is Back! Still!

Have you heard? Burlesque is back! Okay, so it’s been back for a while now, but this weekend there was an extensive article about the trend — and, for the nerds, about the history of burlesque — in the New York Times’s City Section.

Learn all about where burlesque came from, why it went away (and came back), and why Lower East Side cabaret club The Box is absolutely, positively not burlesque (though, uh, we’re still not totally convinced on that one). And while you’re at it, check out quotes and pix from Boinkology friends and faves Little Brooklyn, Murray Hill, and Dirty Martini (among many fabulous others!).

Doesn’t a NYT’s trends piece indicate the beginning of that trends slow and painful death?

duh. as soon as it’s declared “hip” then it’s over. that’s just a fact of life. although i would argue that burlesque took a plunge downhill when Suicide Girls started advertising their ex-hot topic employees with low self-esteem, no clothing, and heels as burlesque dancers.
