The Trouble With Female Troubles

As a lady, with the accompanying ladyparts, I’ve had my fair share of, well, lady infections. Bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, UTIs — been there, done that (more times than I care to remember). And what is so frustrating — aside from the actual infection, of course, which sucks — is the fact that, when you happen to find yourself in that way, you can’t really tell anyone about it. At least not in polite company.

Observe, if you will, the following conversation (which, yes, I have had):

Coworker: Gee, what’s the matter? You look down.
Female With Troubles: I’m sick.
Coworker: With what? A cold?
Female With Troubles: Uh… don’t ask.

Now sure, there are those who might argue that disclosure of female troubles is oversharing of the worst kind (i.e. the kind involving sex parts). But come on, now: yeast infections (and their sister evils) are an everyday part of life. Hell, Monistat even advertises on the TV! Do we really have to gloss over their existence?

Can’t a female with troubles have the freedom to admit what’s wrong?

    Yay malehood.

  • Conrad says :

Tell married co-workers they are less likely to freak out, and are more likely to be past that immature maleness stage (hopefully). Also, Isil, men can get UTIs and Yeast infections.

i’ve never not told someone about a uti because of it being ‘polite conversation’. but i also loudly announce the coming of my period at restaurants. (i did this on saturday!). i hang out with mostly boys though, so i feel like it’s fine if i offend them.

That’s awesome. I tell all my male friends about my lady problems, but I’m more squeamish about mentioning it at work. Though I did tell one coworker once when I had a UTI, and he didn’t drop dead or hate me forever or anything.

  • Xorn Smith says :

I have no problem with women telling me about their female troubles so long as they don’t mind me constantly bitching about my cranky prostate.

I have brought up with my boss that I think UTIs are a worker’s comp issue since sitting through a long ass meeting and holding my pee is not good for the girl parts. Even in my health-oriented field, that line of reasoning doesn’t really hold water. (Ha!)
