Abortion In The Bad Old Days

What was the abortion situation like before Roe v. Wade? You may have heard talk of coat hangers and back alley abortions, or you may have naively believed that illegal abortion meant no abortion (just like drugs, right?), whatever you pictured, Dr. Waldo L. Fielding — a retired gynecologist who practiced in those pro-Roe days — wants you to know what those days were really like.

Fielding’s essay is enlightening, frightening, and at times stomach turning; a true wake up call for anyone who feels that the right to a safe abortion shouldn’t be a priority. Those of us born after Roe v. Wade should count our blessings — and should do everything we can to preserve the rights established by that monumental decision.

For around 2000usd you can fly down here and admire all the creepy clandestine abortion you want. Plus the best bbq ever.

I just want to give a shout out to all the ladies of the Jane (collective, not the magazine) who were trained and skilled at performing abortions in the pre-Roe era.

I’m down for scary stories, because scary happened often and resonates for many folks. But. Not enough is mentioned about women taking care of other women through some serious grassroots training and action.

I bet they also had some great bbq.

Yeah, Roe made things ever so much nicer. For abortionists.

I know of three offhand — Jesse Ketchum, Milan Vuitch, and Benjamin Munson — who had clean records as criminal abortionists, never linked to a patient death. Each went on to kill two patients in his nice state-sanctioned safe-n-legal practice.

I think Margaret Smith, Carole Schaner, Linda Padfield, Yvonne Mesteth, Wilma Harris, and Georgianna English would have been better off in these guys’ criminal practices, when they had the fear of prison to keep them from playing Russian roulette with patient’s lives.

    Christina:

Um, doctors who kill patients have the fear of medical malpractice suits. People who aren’t doctors have the fear of getting charged with manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license. There’s a substantial difference between killing someone and providing an abortion — and the fact is, abortions have become vastly safer since Roe v. Wade. And those who would kill someone still have those pesky laws against killing people to keep their urges at bay.

  • Christina says :

Lux, you believe that. And keep looking for the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. I’m sure they’ll pay you a visit right after these safe-n-legal quacks start cleaning up their acts.

  • Lux Alptraum says :

… yeah, you’re clearly set in your ways. I know plenty of women who have had extremely safe abortions that would not have been available had abortion not been legal, but since facts don’t seem likely to sway you, I’ll just drop the whole argument.

  • Christina says :

And women had perfectly safe abortions in the “bad old days” too. It’s the same guys doing them. They just get in a lot less trouble for botching them because people like you don’t want them punished. You have your priorities, I have mine.

  • secondlastwish says :

Hmm. That was not so much what I was referring to and I sort of feel like Christina is using my point to make a different and warped comment.

My point was that there were some safe abortions pre-Roe and some of those folks took great risks to provide the safest option possible in an unsafe climate. These same providers were working to legalize abortion and provide even safer places for women to get abortions.

If you want to get all factual, abortion has safer health outcomes overall than pregnancy.

Plus it cuts down on carbon emission, so it’s totally green.
