Just yesterday (part of) the blogosphere was shocked by the news that Fleshbot, Gawker Media’s blog about porn, sex, and the web, had partnered with AEBN to launch a Fleshbot-branded video on demand site. “Gawker Media goes hardcore!” the more hysterically-minded proclaimed.
Now, let’s pause for a minute and actually examine the evidence:
Fleshbot was already hardcore. Seriously, hardcore is nothing new.
The VOD site is an affiliate program. Which, as we’ve mentioned before, is one of the ways that adult-themed sites make money. For the confused: no, Fleshbot is not suddenly a porn distributor — it’s more a recruiter for a porn distributor. Which, as a blog that refers people to porn around the web, it pretty much was already.
Nick Denton is not a pornographer. Or maybe he is. To the extent that Fleshbot is a porn site, Nick Denton is a pornographer. But then, if that’s the case, Nick Denton has been a pornographer for several years now.
So, um, where’s the story here again?
Comments
I agree so much.
I was ridiculously amused, both by the outrage that a porn blog would link to a way for people to buy porn and by the fact “mainstream” people can’t seem to understand the idea of an affiliate program.
…and, yes, Fleshbot was hardcore long before they got a VOD theater.
