Through our years of cable subscription, we’ve never been Showtime subscribers. Even during our years of premium cable, we were always loyal to HBO. Through the years of “Queer As Folk,” “The L Word,” and “Weeds,” we always managed to resist — but with the launch of “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” the TV show based on the book based on the blog that debuts tonight, we may no longer be able to resist.
Really, any show that results in something like this, where a sex worker is portrayed being unconflicted about (and, dare we say it, even proud of) her line of work — well, that seems like something that deserves our support.

Showtime handles mature subject matter in a more mature manner, HBO still seems to get it’s rocks off by showing random boob, whereas showtime makes boob intergral to the plot. You’re standing behing the wrong television company. I don’t subscribe to either, but given the choice, Showtime is just better quality.

June 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pmI think Showtime has breadth where HBO used to have depth. “The L Word” was never as good as SATC (in its hey day.) “Brotherhood” was never as good as “The Sopranos” (in its hey day). “The Tudors” was never as good as “Rome.”
But those Showtime shows were decent and when you add in “Dexter,” “Weeds,” “Queer as Folk,” and now “Secret Diary” Showtime has an overall superior slate of programming as HBO really has struggled as its originals have either run their course (Sopranos/SATC/Rome) or lost their mojo (“Entourage” and, yeah, even, “Big Love” of late)
Other than “Flight of the Conchords,” HBO doesn’t have much working these days though I’m interested to see how Anna Paquin’s “True Blood” turns out this fall. “Tell Me You Love Me,” just proved that real sex is like chess — immensely unsatisfying and boring to watch if you’re not directly involved,.
