As you’re probably aware, June is Gay Pride Month. To show our gay pride, we’re having Gay Week over at Boinkology: from Monday to Friday, it’s all gay posts, all the gay time.
Being a trans teen isn’t all that easy — and being a trans teen who happens to wind up in juvie? We’ll let you think on that one.
But things are looking a tiny bit better for trans teens in juvenile detention centers: New York State now allows the trans juvie population to be called by whatever name (and pronoun) they wish, wear the uniform of their choice, and request special sleeping arrangements. Hey, just because you’re in a detention center doesn’t mean you should have to give up basic respect.
Now here’s hoping this policy catches on beyond New York…

Yahh, send dem all do sensitivity camp.
June 25th, 2008 at 1:50 amI think it’s great that NYS is doing this. My only concern is that it came about as a result of a lawsuit. Which isn’t the worst thing, just would be even cooler if it was just done proactively instead of to avoid litigation. Still very cool.
Hopefully it just doesn’t stop with the specific case of trans teens and extends to general sensitivity and understanding about sexual identity and sexual issues in juvenile facilities, which have an unfortunate record regarding abuse, which does nothing to help — and usually worsens — whatever led the young people in question to be in juvenile detention in the first place.
