Susie Bright Hits The Nail On The Head

We’ve long admired Susie Bright‘s writing (even when it’s not about sex!), so it comes as no surprise that she manages to hit the nail squarely on the head and describe what, exactly, it is that we find so troubling about Sarah Palin:

No one would give a whit about any of the Palin peccadilloes if Sarah hadn’t made such a spectacle of herself campaigning as a pro-lifer, gay-hater, abstinence-monger, Creationist-dork. Where does she get off mandating public policy that tells anyone how to live their life?

Sarah’s been under the Crony Club impression that’s there’s one set of rules for stupid voters, and another life of privacy and privileges for the elite. Is it so hard to imagine that Sarah also has family members who are gay, or who’ve had an abortion? When she was earning her B.S. at Idaho State, I bet she had the sense not to stuff Genesis fairy tales down everyone’s throats in Biology class. I can guarantee her family doesn’t preach abstinence around the Moose Stew.

To be sure, there are many admirable things about Sarah Palin: her ability to balance her work and home life, to be the governor of a state while managing five kids — but somehow, we doubt her willingness to afford other women the same level of support that her privileged life has given her, so that they might be similarly successful.

If anything, she reminds us a bit of Caitlin Flanagan — the “stay at home mom” who’s notably championed the cause of mothers giving up work in favor of the kids. Except, of course, when those mothers are named Caitlin Flanagan and want to keep their jobs as prolific writers. See, it’s okay because she’s not you — so she’s allowed to break the rules.

Definitely a home-run here. However, my question is that with all of this talk over Palin, wouldn’t you think that this is exactly what the right set out to accomplish? I doubt they even cared about whether the talk over Palin was positive or negative, just the idea of having one of theirs hogging all of media’s attention away from Obama must have been one of their primary goals with Palin.
