Obama Campaign Seeks To Give Visibility To Rape Survivors

Via Jezebel, we discovered this story about the Obama campaign seeking out a rape survivor to speak in an upcoming ad — presumably one about the McCain-Palin stance on reproductive rights.

Frankly, we find this positively thrilling, largely because we get excited any time someone gets a chance to speak up and remind America of the realities of sexual assault: that it’s something that happens to way too many women, it’s something that can happen to pretty much anyone (yes, even “good” girls and smart women), and it’s something we need to work even harder to prevent. Putting the needs of survivors of sexual assault first and foremost in a campaign commercial, and actually letting the survivors speak for themselves — well, that sounds like a good first step to us.

The democrats are going to take a LIBERAL stance on reporductive rights? They’re not going to avoid and minimize and shuffle rightward?

    That’s…awe-insppiring.

While the Obama ticket would like to champion rape survivors, the McCain ticket would rather run with a woman that would rather charge the rape victim for their rape kit, rather than make room for it in the budget. Thanks to Palin and her budgets, rape survivors can get raped a second time when they get their bill in the mail.
