Last week saw the launch of “PG Porn,” James Gunn’s attempt to make porn without the sex — or, in other words, same cheesy plots, same lame set up, except instead of a blowjob, the scene ends with Aria Giovanni getting accidentally shot in the head with a nail gun.
Nailing your wife with a penis? Bad, X-rated content. Nailing your wife with a nail gun? Why, that’s just some family friendly entertainment right there!
Now, I’m not troubled by the violence, per se. It’s more that I’m troubled by the juxtaposition of sex and violence, this idea that it’s totally okay to kill a woman, but insanely horrific to fuck her. Really? Is that really what we believe?
Oh right, this is America. How could I forget? We’ll do everything we can to protect the little ones from the sight of a nipple, but a bloody corpse is just a normal part of the day.
[NB: Darklady has an excellent piece about this mess over here.]

I get the feeling it’s supposed to be satirical…Nathan Fillion’s in it, you can’t take it too seriously.
October 13th, 2008 at 6:57 pmNathan Fillion needs a better agent. How do you go from “Dr. Horrible” to this.
I am bugged by the violence actually. The way the driving guitar picks up, like “WOOHOO! AUSUMM HEDSHOT!” kind of way was creepy.
I don’t see how a woman getting killed with a nail gun is “PG”

Well, it’s certainly meant to be satirical… I’m just not sure what, exactly, it’s satirizing.
October 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pmYeah, they say on their MySpace blog that they are trying to point out the irony in the fact that violence gets a pass while sex gets XXX ratings. And they say that future episodes will include violence against men.
I think it is interesting, and clever, if a bit juvenile in execution. But that might be part of the point, as well.
October 13th, 2008 at 8:35 pmHope they do it the other way around too.
Schwarzenegger’s Commando would be among my first choises.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:41 amThank you for pointing this out, Lux! I took a look at PGporn, and was frankly horrified. I’m glad at least someone’s talking about the issue of the sex/violence juxtaposition.
And Anomie, maybe that is the point. But it’s not clear that it is – which means it’s been poorly executed. (No pun intended.)
