It’s All Fun And Games Until Someone Goes To A Dubai Prison

One of my good friends loves having seaside sex. I know because she tells me. Constantly. Any time she vacations somewhere tropical, I get the inevitable text message about her making bacon on the beach. And, yeah, ok, I’m jealous. At least I was, until I found out that sometimes tourists get their comeuppance for using other countries’ scenic spots as their own personal mattress.

This July, two Britons were arrested for having sex on the beach in Dubai. Two weeks ago, they were sentenced to three months in prison. They could have received six years. (They’re appealing the decision.)

This has generated a fair amount of bad press for Dubai. But many European countries have laws against public sex, too, and it does seem like a classic rude, arrogant foreigner move to go at it on public property in a notoriously conservative country. (Not only were they having sex, but they were also drunk and unmarried—two states the Dubai courts do not look kindly upon.) Honestly, it reminds me bit of that situation in the 90s where an American teenager was sentenced to a caning after committing vandalism in Singapore.

What do you all think?

Every consulate/embassy I’ve ever dealt with has said the same thing: wherever you’re going, if you break the law, you’re on your own. You’re not at home anymore, and must respect the laws of the land of face the consequences.

I’m 100% for protesting (even defying and breaking) bad laws as an avenue of protest in one’s home country. But to do so abroad is stupid, and IMO most of the time, the stupid deserve everything they get.

Its important to abide by the laws of the land regardless of what you are used to at home. Its illegal to have sex on the beach in Florida too BUT that law isn’t really enforced. If caught, you are routinely just run off by the police… not arrested.

Unfortunately, most of the consequences for breaking laws in other countries SEVERELY outweigh the crime that was committed to begin with. If you are a connoisseur of sex on the beach in foreign countries, it would behoove you to research the laws of the land first. BUT…..

When in Rome…. do as the Romans do.

Yea, but the reports also say the couple let the police officer’s earlier warnings go unheeded, following which the woman hurled insults and a shoe at the officer when he came by the second time. . . the woman now denies those allegations, but as the general consensus seems to be, they WERE in a foreign land and they should’ve respect the local laws. .
