People On Craigslist Vaguely Aware of Outside World

Don’t let this shock you, but apparently some pervy patriots seized upon the presidential election as a tool for sex-having. Because it’s so hard to believe without concrete evidence, Asylum collected screen shots of horny New Yorkers on election eve writing Obama- or McCain-themed Casual Encounters posts. This is reminiscent of other write-ups about Craigslist cries for loving during the darkest weeks of the stock market crash, when “I lost my job at Lehman, comfort fuck me please?” was the dominant hook.

These news items on Craigslist can be fun, but am I the only one who thinks they’re mostly weird? I mean, is anything on Craigslist ever really that noteworthy? Everyone—well, everyone except for my mom, who mere weeks ago said “Have you heard of a site called…Craigslist?” (aww, Mom, cute!)—is well aware that Craigslist is a treasure trove of alternately amusing or painfully stupid posts from people so desperate for orgasm with/on/in another human being that their brains have virtually shut down. Or they’re trying to scalp Girl Talk tickets at like a 5000% mark up. Of course these posts occasionally reflect actual current events. How else can you find common ground with the anonymous, equally horny masses if you don’t use “nice weather we’re having” or “I’m losing my house just like you are”?

I’m just kind of confused as to why any journalist uses Craigslist as confirmation that people are affected by profoundly life-affecting events. A new president? Let’s see what Craigslist thinks! Thousands of bankers simultaneously losing their jobs and life savings? I wonder how that’s playing out on Craigslist. Do we really need more evidence that sex is the appropriate response for every single life experience, from elation to boredom to new baby to “my life is ruined” misery? Sex is dessert for your whole body. And it’s always the right time for dessert.
