Have you ever watched an “unboxing”?
No, it’s not some passive resistance form of combat, it’s a style of video wherein a man (it’s more often than not a man) holing a video camera opens some kind of gadget item. Examples include the iPhone, the OLPC, and something called a Chumby. There’s a wonderful feeling of fetish to these videos, the excitement in the unboxer’s voice, the way the camera weaves and takes in every glorious inch of tech. Watching these always puts me in mind of POV porn, that style of porn wherein we see from the perspective of a man (it’s more often than not a man) getting it on.
So, the Carrie Bradshaw question: in an age when tech is sexy, is unboxing the new porn?
